How to forward calls from Grasshopper to Callspace
Keep your Grasshopper number and forward the calls you can't take to Callspace, where an AI assistant answers, qualifies the job, and books it — instead of rolling to voicemail. A step-by-step setup guide.
Grasshopper gives your business a phone number and rings your real phones through extensions. It works — until you’re on a job, driving, or closed for the night. Then the call rolls to voicemail, and a voicemail is a job going to whoever the caller dials next.
You don’t have to choose between answering every call yourself and losing it. You can forward your Grasshopper calls to Callspace, where an AI assistant picks up on the first ring, answers the caller’s questions, qualifies the job, and books it. You keep your Grasshopper number — there’s nothing to port.
How forwarding to Callspace works
Grasshopper routes each of your numbers to an extension, and each extension forwards to one or more real phones. To hand calls to Callspace, you add your Callspace number as a forwarding number on the extension. After that, calls to your Grasshopper number ring straight through to Callspace, and the assistant answers.
What you’ll need
A Callspace account. When you sign up, Callspace provisions a local number that your assistant starts answering immediately — that’s the number you’ll forward to. You can find it any time under Settings → Call Forwarding. Get started
Forward your Grasshopper extension to Callspace
- Sign in to your Grasshopper admin portal.
- Go to Call management → Extensions and open the extension you want to forward. For most solo operators that’s your main extension.
- Under Call forwarding numbers, click Add call forwarding, enter your Callspace number under “Forward incoming calls to,” set the status to Active, and save.
- Turn off call screening for that number — choose “Direct connect.” This is the step everyone misses. By default Grasshopper plays “you have a call, press 1 to accept” before it connects the call. Your Callspace assistant won’t press 1, so every call would fall through to voicemail. “Direct connect” hands the call over the moment Callspace answers.
- Optional: send the number straight to that extension. Go to Call management → Numbers & call routing, click Edit next to your Grasshopper number, and set it to Direct connect to extension so callers skip the main menu.
That’s the whole setup. There’s no confirmation call or code to enter on the Callspace side — Grasshopper starts forwarding as soon as you save.
Decide when calls go to Callspace
There are two common setups:
- Always on. Make Callspace the extension’s only forwarding number and it answers every call. Best if you rarely pick up the business line yourself.
- After hours or overflow. Use Grasshopper’s forwarding schedule on the same extension to route calls to Callspace only outside business hours. Or list your own phone first with a short ring duration — 25 to 40 seconds — and add Callspace next, so it catches the calls you don’t grab.
Confirm it’s working
- Call your Grasshopper number from another phone. Your Callspace assistant should answer and greet you by your business name.
- In Callspace, open Settings → Call Forwarding and tap Verify forwarding — Callspace places a call and confirms the forward reaches it. (The star-code shortcut on that screen is for mobile carriers like Verizon and AT&T, not Grasshopper, so for Grasshopper you set forwarding in the portal and this just double-checks it.)
- Every answered call lands in your Callspace inbox — a full transcript, a recording you can play back, and the details the assistant collected: who called, why, and the time they booked.
Why forward to an assistant instead of voicemail
Voicemail assumes the caller is willing to wait. Most aren’t — when someone has a problem now, they work down the search results until someone picks up. A missed call isn’t a message in a box; it’s a job you already paid to generate, handed to a competitor.
Callspace answers on the first ring, around the clock. It asks your intake questions, books the appointment or flags a true emergency for a callback, and logs every call so nothing slips. You keep your Grasshopper number, there’s nothing to port, and setup takes about five minutes.
