How to forward calls from Google Voice to Callspace

Google Voice is one of the most common free business lines, and it works the same way for everyone: your Google Voice number rings whatever phones you’ve linked to it. That’s fine until you can’t pick up those phones — then the call lands in Google Voice voicemail, and voicemail is where jobs go to get lost.

You can point Google Voice at Callspace instead, so an AI assistant answers, qualifies the caller, and books the job. It takes a few minutes — with one Google Voice quirk worth knowing before you start.

How Google Voice forwarding actually works

Google Voice doesn’t have a “forward to any number” box. It routes calls by ringing your linked numbers. So to send calls to Callspace, you add your Callspace number as a linked number, then tell Google Voice to ring only that.

The catch: Google Voice verifies every linked number with a code, and it can be picky about VoIP numbers — which is what your Callspace number is. It usually works, but there’s a quirk worth checking first, covered at the end of this guide.

What you’ll need

A Callspace account. When you sign up, Callspace provisions a local number your assistant answers immediately — that’s the number you’ll link. Find it any time under Settings → Call Forwarding. Get started

Add your Callspace number as a linked number

1. Go to voice.google.com and click Settings (the gear, top right). On the Android app, open Menu → Settings.
2. Under Account, open Linked numbers — it’s Devices and numbers in the app — and click New linked number.
3. Enter your Callspace number and start verification.
4. Read the code in Callspace. Google Voice sends a verification code to your Callspace number, either by text or by an automated call that reads it aloud. Both land in your Callspace inbox: a texted code shows up as a message, and a spoken code shows up in that call’s transcript — or tap play to hear it. Type the code back into Google Voice and click Verify.

Ring only Callspace

By default Google Voice rings every linked number and every Google Voice app at once. To hand calls to Callspace alone, go to Settings → Calls:

• Under My devices, turn off the Google Voice apps you don’t want ringing.
• Under Call forwarding, turn off every linked number except your Callspace number.

Toggling a number off doesn’t delete it — it just stops it from ringing. Prefer to keep Callspace as a backup? Leave your own phone on, and Google Voice will ring both — Callspace answers whatever you don’t.

One limit to know: the free Google Voice plan can’t route calls to different numbers on a schedule — that’s a Workspace feature. If you only want after-hours coverage, the simplest path is to let Callspace answer everything and return the calls you want from the Callspace app.

If Google Voice won’t verify the number

Google Voice runs a check on the numbers you link and sometimes refuses VoIP or business numbers with “this number can’t be verified.” That’s a Google Voice restriction, not a Callspace one — and if you hit it, Google Voice won’t forward to your Callspace number. Two clean ways around it:

• Use your Callspace number directly. Google Voice is usually a spare line, so the easiest fix is to start handing out your Callspace number — on your website, Google Business Profile, and invoices — and let the assistant answer from the first ring.
• Forward a different line instead. If your main number is a mobile or landline, forwarding that to Callspace is more reliable. Callspace’s Settings → Call Forwarding screen gives you the exact activation code for your carrier.

Confirm it’s working

• Call your Google Voice number from another phone. Callspace should answer and greet you by your business name.
• In Callspace, open Settings → Call Forwarding and tap Verify forwarding to double-check the connection.
• Every answered call lands in your Callspace inbox — a full transcript, a recording you can play back, and the details the assistant collected.

Why forward to an assistant instead of voicemail

Voicemail assumes the caller will wait. Most won’t — when someone has a problem now, they work down the search results until someone picks up. A missed call isn’t a message in a box; it’s a job you already paid to generate, handed to a competitor.
